Wow, I’m getting all these comments on my “All I hear is Blah Blah Blah” post. Most are telling me how closed minded I am and how it’s impossible to learn all the languages. The thing is I’m not closed minded and you can easily go to a book store and order those little translation books before you go to another country. I have not a problem with foreigners coming to America. I welcome them. I have a problem with people getting their panties in a bunch when the owner of a restaurant decides to have an English Ordering Only sign. It is not as simple as Steak being the same word in every country. Here in my great state we have a pretty good bit of Japanese exchange students living here. When I worked at Walmart there was a Japanese girl that asked me a question and I couldn’t understand her and she couldn’t understand me it frustrated both of us. This didn’t happen often maybe once or twice since they seem as if they where smart enough to learn enough English to get by or they had someone with them that could speak English. And these where college kids, who where not living here just going to Salem -Teikyo University for the Semester. And they took the time out to learn enough English to get by yet some who come here to work and live expect us to accommodate them. I would never, never go to another country expecting them to know English. I would learn their native language or get a translation book. My husband and I are hoping some day in the near future to take a trip to Japan. Not live there, just go there for a vacation. And we are all ready trying to learn Japanese.

July 28, 2006 at 6:59 pmWow, I didn’t notice that thread was still getting traffic. The most idiotic argument of all is the “our forefathers were foreigners once.” I don’t care. I’m not a foreigner. I live here, and I speak English. If I own my own restraunt, and I don’t want to spend all day trying to figure out what the hell some Japanese or Spanish guy is trying say, I’ll make a sign demanding them to order in English only. That is my right, that is my perogative, and if some foreigner wants to consider me hostile, he/she can take their business to a more accomodating restraunt. Its that simple. It is not my job to appease every single nationality on the planet.
